When you go to the GoSun website (https://gosun.co/pages/our-story), to the Our Story page, the first thing you see is in big bold letters:
“GoSun is a team of designers, engineers, and change-makers, intent on serving the world with unparalleled clean energy solutions.”
Then, if you scroll down to read about the Founder and CEO, you learn that:
“GoSun creates innovative products that encourage fun, resilience and independence. We are passionate about our products and how they power our customers’ lives. Founded in a small suburban garage in Cincinnati, Ohio, we grew quickly thanks to our community of committed customers and shareholders, who not only believe in our products, but also use them to bring people together.”
While Energy Shift has not used these products, we are sharing this information for several important reasons—this company is home grown in the United States; has an incredible ethic of giving and sharing; and, like Energy Shift, is dedicated to exposing people to alternatives to fossil fuel-powered living.
GoSun is a relatively small company—but despite that, the company offers a surprisingly large variety of solar based consumer products. Falling into five categories: Ovens, Coolers, Power, Water, and RVs & Boats.
Digging in a little…
– There are three types of ovens offered, ranging from a small meal for one size (2lbs), to the largest meal for 4-6 size (14lbs), with a medium sized one that cooks meals for 2-3 people weighing in at 7lbs.
– Coolers, like the ovens, come in small, medium, and large—but not simply related to size but also offering different features. The solar power aspect of the coolers is the power to cool the contents (no ice needed) and, for example, the largest cooler has two areas; one can be used for cooling the other to freeze items.
– The power product category includes more than a dozen items. Ranging from what you’d expect, such as a power bank (battery) to clever items including a car windshield shade outfitted with solar collection capabilities that not only keeps the car cool, but also charges a battery. Another product in the power category is a four-foot by just over two-feet folding table that has a solar panel top, covered by tempered glass. It can be used as a table while also collecting power from the sun!
– The water category includes water purification systems, a portable sink like item with a faucet, and a coffee or tea maker that doubles as a travel mug.
– The last category is the most surprising and quite impressive. The RVs and Boats category includes two boats (that comfortably carry up to six adults), a camper, and a tiny house—all powered by the sun using solar panels and batteries.
Supporting businesses that are doing good work is a priority for Energy Shift—here is some of what GoSun are doing. From their website:
“Although GoSun is still a small entrepreneurial business, we believe we should all do what we can, when we can. Since our inception, we’ve worked with dozens of nonprofit organizations to provide free or discounted solar products to those that need them most.”
“GoSun has provided funding to support the efforts of the California Fire Foundation, The Houston Food Bank, Global Giving, and Operation BBQ Relief. We have made donations to The American Red Cross and World Central Kitchen to assist in Hurricane Florence relief efforts and to the California Community Wildfire Relief Fund.”
While volunteering with non-profits in Haiti and Latin America, Patrick experienced first-hand the vulnerability of energy poverty. Touched by the resilience and happiness of those living on just $2 a day, he spent years facilitating technology, energy and social innovations in the developing world. These efforts, including many failures to introduce typical solar ovens, led to the realization that his solar hot dog cooker invention could be something more, serving a great need in emerging markets.”
